Fashion Fringe- Colin Mc Dowell in conversation with Matthew Willamson

The talk by Matthew Willamson was very interesting and exciting, to have the opportunity to go to a talk by him was amazing.. I love his work!!
He is such an incredible designer and is an interesting character, he spoke a lot about how he went from being a student in St Martins to being on the catwalk which I found inspiring and exciting..
He talked about being single minded when thinking of ideas, be creative and extrodinary and be expressive in work you create. Some people may like your work and really understand it where as some people may not but as long as you like it.
"Finding something poor and turning it into something rich"- I found this quote very interesting as I love working with recycled things and found objects. He also works with interiors with his home collection "Butterly Home" which I found very exciting and interesting, this helped me thinking about interiors of the new building and creating spaces.

Hidden things

After doing the arrivals task it got me thinking about how I could develop my ideas from this. I looked at arriving at New York it was overwhelming and had a big impact on the way I think about things and look at things.

After doing the arrivals task it got me thinking about how I could develop my ideas from this. I looked at arriving at New York it was overwhelming and had a big impact on the way I think about things and look at things.

It got me thinking about what I really know about the culture of this city, all I ever really knew was that it was an amazing city and a very big one, full of excitement, energy and inspiration. Then I started thinking about Manchester, the brief is about old school/ new school. I lived in this city and again knew little about it.

I was curious to find out about this city and see what I could uncover; attending several talks by speakers such as DJ David Haslam and Illustrator Adam Dant opened my eyes to the culture of this great city.

I started thinking about the idea of uncovering things from buildings and breaking up dimensions of a city. When walking around New York there was so many buildings that surrounded me but I never really thought about what went on inside the building or what they looked like. They all looked so similar from the outside but what did the interior of the buildings look like?

I found a connection between New York and Manchester and how both cities have so many huge buildings which surround us and small streets coming off from every direction.

I started taking photographs and exploring the streets of the Northern Quarter and hidden cracks in the small alleys and walls to see what I could uncover.

Adam Dant

Adam Dant spoke about pamphlet’s he created which people would then buy, full of the culture of Manchester, I loved his illustrations and how he was diverse in his work.

This got me on to thinking about hidden meanings within the paintings which I found to be an interesting concept.
