Experimenting with knits
I wanted to bring some sort of workshop into my project. I started looking at knit again and started thinking about how I could combine it in to my work. I started to explore colours of threads I wanted to use to relate to my initial ideas; I also did some composition ideas that I might work with. I created these knit samples using a variety of techniques to reflect my idea of hidden things, adding threads into the knits using E-wrapping. I felt these worked well as they are textured and give a sense of something being explored and hidden. The sense of uncovering something...
I started to explore how I could manipulate the shape of the knits twisting, screwing and curling them up to look more textured and interesting.

Experimenting with drawings/paintings
I started to experiment with paint and other media to create
some textured observational drawings and paintings. I wanted to explore mark
making and using water with inks to create different effects. I did these
drawings and paintings from the research I collected from my hidden things
idea, reflecting back on Old school/New school theme.
I introduced water into one of my drawing experiments to develop my idea of reflection.

Laura Buckley
After a taught session the other day on moving image and video I was introduced to designer Laura Buckley.
She creates projections using mirrors. The work she produces really inspired me as I have been working with projection. I researched more into her and found some really interesting pieces of work and videos. Her concept of work is unusual and exciting.
Interiors
Whilst doing research for the contextualising in practice assignment I came across these amazing interiors from the book Creative Spaces.
These interiors really inspired me; I love how much is shown through these spaces including colours and textures. I love how a space can be transformed into something exciting and interesting and holds so much meaning. Each interior is a reflection of the creator’s personality. It’s almost like a personal environment being opened up to the public eye. I like how the interiors look like a collection of materials and objects which mean something significant to the designer. They got me thinking about how we can transform a space into a place, somewhere comforting and full of memories.

Reflection
After experimenting with projection I started to think about reflection. When filming our short films on Thursday I came across these interesting puddles... When looking into the puddles I loved how they reflected the construction of the new building in them. They have an unusual texture to them. These photographs are really interesting and I want to explore with reflection and produce some experiments.
I came across Michaela Nettell, she works with reflection and creates interesting short films.
Here is an example of a peice of her work..

Projection with paper
After creating some of the 3D models it got me thinking about experimenting more into them, I started to make larger ones thinking about the texture of them. I then started to explore projecting an image from my investigation into hidden things such as streets, broken glass and hidden alley onto the 3D models. I wanted to see how projecting the image could uncover something interesting.
The Projections worked very successfully and I was pleased with them....
I thought the street images worked well onto the models and it made the street feel like it was coming alive. When looking at these photographs it reminds me of when you look into one of those mirrors which changes what you look like.
This one almost gives a spooky feel as it is a disfigurement to the original image...
I then started to experiment with other media such as thread. I wanted to explore how the texture of the image could be changed and how texture could be added.
The Projections worked very successfully and I was pleased with them....
I love the textural qualities these projections have produced; I also love how the image looks 3D and comes out at you. The paper models pick up the image really well.
I felt these were exciting and really portrayed my ideas about hidden things. The experiments suggest that something is being uncovered.

3D Models
We started making 3D models for the new building relating to my ideas about hidden things. I started to think about making storage spaces for materials etc. I also had an idea about creating holes in the walls for storage as well. I started cutting strips of paper and twisting them together to create a textured surface.
This got me thinking about creating some sort of Lamp or putting light behind it and seeing what affect this has on the space around it, I also want to experiment with project and see what i can do with that. I want to use images of Manchester and project them onto the model designs to see what it creates. The idea of bringing something old into the new building by using images of hidden areas in Manchester...
